Fir’awn (Pharaoh) — فِرْعَوْن
فرعون
Also known as: Pharaoh, Ramesses II (by some historians)
Path — Deviated Path | گمراہی
Reason: Claimed divinity (‘I am your highest lord’ 79:24), enslaved Bani Israel, killed male babies, rejected every sign, drowned — his deathbed declaration rejected (10:90-91)
Story — English
The ultimate symbol of tyranny in the Quran. Claimed to be the highest lord (‘Ana rabbukumul ala’ 79:24). Enslaved and oppressed Bani Israel. Ordered the killing of all male Israelite babies. Rejected every sign brought by Musa. Called the magicians to defeat Musa — when the magicians believed, he had them crucified. Pursued Musa and Bani Israel to the Red Sea. As he was drowning, he declared: ‘I believe that there is no god but the One the Children of Israel believe in.’ Allah rejected his deathbed declaration — ‘Now? When before you disobeyed.’ His body was preserved as a sign for those who come after (10:92). The Quran describes him as ‘a sign for those who come after him’ — preserved as a lesson.
Lessons from the Quran
- The most powerful human who ever rejected Allah — and his complete end
- Deathbed repentance is not accepted when it is forced by seeing punishment
- Allah preserves some bodies as signs — Fir’awn’s mummified body is a lesson
- Power and wealth are not signs of Allah’s approval
- The system of Fir’awn (claiming divine authority over people) is a recurring danger
