Reason: Outward profession of Islam with inner disbelief; described as in the lowest depths of Hell (4:145); a surah named for them (Al-Munafiqun)
Story — English
The hypocrites of Madinah who outwardly professed Islam while concealing disbelief. Led by Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul (though he is not named in the Quran). They would say ‘We believe’ then privately say ‘We are only mocking.’ They undermined the Muslim community, spread discord, refused to fight, returned from battles, and threatened to expel the Prophet from Madinah. A whole surah (Al-Munafiqun) addresses them. They are described as ‘in the lowest depths of the Fire’ (4:145) — below even the open disbelievers.

مدینہ کے منافقین جو ظاہر میں مسلمان، باطن میں کافر۔ اللہ ان کا مذاق اڑا رہا ہے (2:15)۔ مسجد اور جماعت میں شرکت — لیکن نماز میں سستی (4:142)۔ جہنم کے سب سے نچلے طبقے میں (4:145)۔
