A powerful, arrogant civilization in ancient Arabia known for their towering pillars (89:7). They asked: ‘Who is mightier than us?’ They rejected their prophet Hud and were destroyed by a violent wind (reeh sarsar) that lasted seven nights and eight days continuously — it left them like hollow trunks of palm trees (69:7). Their ruins are referenced in the Quran. They are the archetypal example of arrogance destroyed.
